FOH UPDATES
EASTLEIGH CLINIC PROJECT
The town of Eastleigh, in Kenya, is a relatively small district but has a highly dense population. Eastleigh is a trade oriented community, situated on the outskirts of the capital city of Nairobi. The community’s demographics are predominately of Somali immigrants and refugees. Eastleigh has been dubbed: “Little Mogadishu”, because of its semblance to the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu.
FOH has committed to meeting some of the medical needs of the residents of Eastleigh. Our goals are as follows:
Short Term Goal:
- Lease an office space and start offering services which will include physical assessments, first aid services, treatment of minor ailments, health education as well as referral services to qualified local doctors.
Long Term Goal:
- To operate a fully fledged ‘mini-hospital’ that will be offering a myriad of medical services such as medical/surgical services, obstetric and gynecological services, pediatric, dental and orthopedic services.
- Link up with a group of medical professionals in the USA as well as local professionals in Kenya, who will be making regular trips to the region and carry out extensive medical campaigns and treatments.
Method of Implementation
- An identified certified community health nurse will serve as the ground provider of the services. The clinic will be opened six days a week. A lab technologist will be contracted to offer the lab tests required. Complicated conditions will be referred to local doctors for further treatment.
Immediate Needs
- Funds to rent a three roomed facility that will be used for the start up clinic facility.
- Funds to purchase supplies that will be used in the clinic, such as furniture, assessment tools such as thermometers, a blood pressure machine, and a weighing scale, etc.
- Funds to provide the community health nurse a salary, in addition to funds to pay for a contracted lab technician.
