FOH Medical Clinic Project
The Somali diaspora community of Eastleigh, in Kenya, is a relatively small district but has a highly dense population. Eastleigh is a socially and culturally vibrant community situated on the outskirts of the capital city of Nairobi. The community’s demographics are predominately of Somali immigrants and refugees. Eastleigh has been dubbed: “Little Mogadishu”, because of its semblance to the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu.
Despite all the active commerce Eastleigh has very few medical facilities; most of which offer substandard services. Nearly all the medical services in the community do not have governmental certification and hence there is minimal third party supervision or inspections.
As a result a lot of the medical operations are fraudulent and ill equipped to administer proper medical service. This situation only creates more of a problem. Eastleigh is a community already plagued with a high prevalence of waterborne and airborne diseases.
In addition, the increasing HIV/AIDS rates due to the degree of trade in the town are unaddressed due to prevelent stigmas associated with the virus.
FACE OF HARVEST (FOH) was so moved by the plight of the residents in Eastleigh during a visit in the winter of 2009, it became apparent that a medical clinic would be a great means to serve the physical and spiritual needs of the community’s residents. FOH has since launched medical clinic operations in Eastleigh. At present, the program is run on the ground by a community certified community nurse. The more severe cases are referred to local physicians. In addition, two community development agents ensure that the logistical requirements of this operation are efficiently carried out.
